Mystery, Wonder and Awe! During this season of the year, I am reminded of the incredible events surrounding the birth of our Lord. I realize that we don't know the day of the year on which our Lord was born. I suspect God wanted to focus our hearts on the pinnacle of Jesus' life which was his suffering, death on a cross and resurrection. However, He thought enough of Jesus' birth to give us two records of it in scripture and, like the Wise Men of old, wise people today will seek out the one born "King of the Jews" and celebrate His coming into the world. What amazes me about the birth of Jesus is the sense of mystery, wonder and awe that surrounded His birth. So many questions seem unanswered. For example: Why was he born in a stable? I know that humility played a role. But why not some lowly house instead of a stable. Why was the announcement of His birth told only to shepherds? Surely around Bethlehem there were others worthy of the news. Why did a star appear to the Magi from the east? Would not God's priests in Jerusalem have been better witnesses to the Lord's birth? Why was He given the name "Jesus/Joshua?" I know it means "the Lord saves" but it was such a common name in the first century. Why not a name unique to Him? And how did the incarnation take place in the first place? I know the Holy Spirit played a role; but how does God become man? I know we could go on and on with the questions. But I am always left with a sense of mystery, wonder and awe. Then again, maybe that's the way it's supposed to be! In Awe of Him, Leslie S. Chapman
