THE POWER OF RENEWAL On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington devastating over 150 square miles and killing over 60 people. The land was so devastated that almost all signs of life disappeared. It was thought that it would be decades before the forest and wildlife around Mount St. Helens would recover. However, scientists have been stunned by how quickly life has rebounded. The entire ecosystem is experiencing a renewal that has become a living laboratory. Like Mount St. Helens, man was created with the amazing ability to be "renewed." The apostle Paul describes the process with these words, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will" (Romans 12:2). Renewal is so important. It gives us hope. It brings healing. It gives us a direction and purpose in life. And it all begins with a "renewing" of our minds. But how do we begin the process? What are the beginning steps for personal renewal? Let me offer a few suggestions. First, surround yourself with "renewed" people. Hope is as contagious as the flu during winter. We all reflect some of the characteristics of those with whom we associate (1 Corinthians 15:33). Therefore, associate with those who evidence "renewal" in their own lives. Secondly, change what you put into your mind. We are directly affected by what we see, hear and think. If you want a new outlook on life, start reading and meditating on those things that will build you up and make you into what you want to be. Begin with daily Bible reading. Immerse yourself in devotional literature. Set out to learn something new. You'll be surprised at how uplifted you will feel. Thirdly, prize friendships. Meet someone new. Make an effort to form new relationships. Children have this amazing ability to meet and make new friends. It opens new horizons for them and it will for us. Finally, take a "Sabbath" rest. In a culture that values work over rest, is it any wonder that so many feel "burned-out"? Take time to recharge your batteries physically. God rested after working for six days and urged us to do the same. Renewal is impossible unless preceded by rest. May God bless you in your journey to renewal! Leslie S. Chapman
