THE VALUE OF REST In Mark 6:31, following the apostles' ministry of the Limited Commission, the Bible states, "Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, 'Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'" It is refreshing to note that Jesus understood the value of "rest" and "restoration." It was not unusual to find Jesus alone, away from the crowds, finding strength in the quiet times of simply being with God (Mk. 1:35; Mt. 14:23). Several years ago, gospel preacher Charles Hodge gave a speech to a group of preaching students at Harding Graduate School of Religion. In that incredible address, brother Hodge made this interesting comment, "If you want to stay, you have to go!" Contradictory? Not hardly. Brother Hodge's point was that occasionally we need to step back, re-examine our ministries and refocus of vision. All of us must sometime "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." I'm always amazed at what I see both while I'm on vacation and after I've returned—insights into my own personal ministry, the work of the Lord, and my family relationships. First, you're able to see the big picture again. Sometimes, I get so caught up examining the leaves that I forget what the tree looks like. Occasionally, you need to step back and ask some serious questions about the priorities you have practiced. It's amazing how the noise of life can sometimes drown out the quiet whisper of God (1 Kings 19:12). Second, you're able to see the need to realign your priorities. After a while, we all tend to become entangled in the trivialities of life. Stephen Covey in his book, The Seven Habits Of Highly Successful People, urges the reader to invest in those things that may not necessarily be urgent, but are of extreme importance (e.g., one's relationship with God, Bible Study, family, etc). Finally, you're able to once again appreciate the wonderful gift God's salvation, the love of a precious family, and the value of true friendship. Like the apostles, it is good to answer Jesus' invitation—"Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." Leslie S. Chapman
